Drought Shocks-Pastoralists Feeding Program

With the increasingly unpredictable April-short rains and December-long rains due to climate change effects, Pastoralists in ASAL areas are quite often caught unprepared without temporary/long measures in dealing with food shortage brought about by drought shocks.

Pastoralists during dry spell move with their animals in search for pasture and the most affected in this mix are the school going children. To retain them to ensure they continue schooling and without dropping off school to join their pastoralists parents, Lata Network Foundation recently introduced feeding program for special cases with support from individuals and institutions

Water Challenges-Solar Panel Remedy

Samburu County (SC) falls under Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) in Kenya. ASAL areas are prone to water challenges despite having adequate underground waters. Samburu County Government (SCG) and other development partners have sunk many boreholes in many places in SC. Unfortunately some of these boreholes sometimes get vandalized leaving them in ruins without repairs.

Recently Lata Network Foundation did a snap survey on 20 boreholes in Waso division and found that if repairs would be done, it would be more costly and thus leaving with option to mobilize for funding to have boreholes connected to solar panels than using manual hand pump which is physically challenging especially to pregnant mothers or people with disability.
